Foods to Avoid With Braces
Braces will improve your smile and bite, but people who wear corrective devices must be even more diligent when it comes to dental hygiene. This includes watching what you eat. For the most part, you can continue enjoying the food you love, but there are a few categories of food to avoid. These foods should be avoided even if you don’t wear braces.
Hard foods can cause damage to not only braces but to teeth also. None of us want to schedule an emergency appointment for a chipped tooth or a broken bracket. Here are some hard foods to avoid:
- Jolly Ranchers (or other hard candies)
- Corn on the Cob
- Carrots and Apples, unless they are cut into small pieces
- Peanut Brittle
Sticky foods become wedged in between your teeth and brackets, allowing bacteria to fester which leads to cavities and other oral health issues. Here are some sticky foods to avoid:
- Gummy Bears, Worms, Etc.
We like our sweets as much as the next person, but they really should be kept to a minimum. On the occasions you do wish to indulge your sweet tooth, make sure to brush and floss afterward. You see, since braces create hard-to-reach area throughout your mouth, it’s easy for sugars from a variety of foods to remain on your teeth longer and ultimately create plaque. When plaque forms, cavities are soon to follow. Clearly, it’s best to prevent these issues and avoid sweets as much as possible.
