When left untreated, gingivitis can progress into periodontitis, a more serious form of gum disease. Periodontitis can lead to gum recession and tooth loss, among other things.
The best way to fight gum disease is through sound oral hygiene practices. Braces certainly present a challenge to your hygiene routine. Brackets and archwires create new, hard-to-reach areas where plaque and bacteria can accrue. But fortunately, there are some steps you can take to minimize your risk for periodontal disease with braces.
Tips to Proper Hygiene With Braces
- While the standard for brushing is twice per day, with braces, you should brush after every meal! Food can get caught in your brackets and behind the archwire, so you’ll want to make sure you clear the debris after each meal.
- Use a floss threader to floss underneath your brackets and wires.
- Avoid hard candies, or foods that can easily damage or get stuck behind your braces.
- Along with brushing and flossing, it’s helpful to rinse your mouth after each meal. You can do this with water or with mouthwash to keep your mouth clean!
